Introducing Nexon Computer Museum

Computers have undergone a dynamic and fast-paced evolution for the last four decades. It set critical roles for the establishment of world-wide gaming industries, including NEXON. Creativity has always been the cornerstone of NEXON, with constant interest and dedication to develop fun and innovative graphical MMO games. Thus Nexon Computer Museum was established in Jeju to share the rich histo ry of computers with the local community and children, under the premise that tracking and displaying the digital phenomenon, which has increasingly become a pivotal segment of society, is valuable for future generations.

The first NEXON-developed online game The Kingdom of Winds is an icon for the beginning of Korean online gaming industry and currently the longest serviced commercial graphical MMORPG in the world. For almost two decades, The Kingdom of Winds has been the first example that enabled people from across the world to simultaneously share their imagination, creativeness, stories and experiences – which became a pivotal turning point in the birth of Korean online gaming culture and the industry that we know today. The Nexon Computer Museum also aims to interact and communicate with a range of visitors from across boundaries, by collecting, preserving, researching, exhibiting and educating historic digital artifacts. Furthermore, the museum aims to collaborate and share knowledge with various institutions and researchers world-wide.

greeting

Each day, computers are becoming more like ‘us’. High demand for enhanced entertaining experience provoked the development of visual and audio technology and the emergence of the gaming industry across the globe. More and more users are now enthusiastically filling digital space with stories from their memories. Nexon Computer Museum aspires to accomplish; to become a lively and on-going museum, and to be a place where visitors can participate and dream about the future by looking into the path of computer and video game history. A wide range of interactive exhibits and collection-based displays, shall buildup imagination, creativity, stories and individual experiences of our visitors.

Our first opening exhibition is called Computer as Theatre. We believe entertainment is what drives computer technology to its rapid growth – and still impacting the evolution of digital technology today. Those who first found joy and enthusiasm in computers a few decades ago, including the founders of online gaming culture in Korea, have now become leading individuals in the digital technology and computer industries across the globe. Nexon Computer Museum hopes to be able to bring their past memories and excitement back to life, and look forward to sharing it with future generations.

Nexon Computer Museum focuses on ‘Open Source’ as one of our core strategic values. Various software and hardware these days that are in constant growth are supported by active, on-going commitment of many individuals based on openly revealed and shared information. Thus we look forward to seeing the museum’s continuous and simultaneous growth by openly revealing a wide range of confidential or secretive places in traditional museums; archive, preservation, research and education. Our openly- designed interactive exhibits shall be continuously updated based on our visitors’ feedback and ideas. We believe another chapter of Nexon Computer Museum history and inspirations for our upcoming exhibition shall be written right here, by developing stories and individual experiences of the ones who visited us here today.

We believe this is just the beginning of our long upcoming journey. While the amount of collections may not be as diverse as several prolonged and well-known institutions in other countries, we are very excited to be a part of this historic attempt – just as the founders of Korean online gaming culture must have felt two decades ago. There are many things that still needs to be done, and so many stories yet to be told. Nexon Computer Museum is not a private exhibition hall, but instead seeks a unique role in the history of computers and video games and its worldwide impact on human experience. Our entire staff seeks for your generous and on-going interest, which would tremendously help us to make the museum move forward – to the next chapter.

Thank you.
