Nexon Computer Museum “Special Stage” covers the history of classic video games, with a perspective of arcade machines as one of the first computer to reach mainstream and entertainment. Collection includes one of the first video games Computer Space and PONG, along with several critically acclaimed arcade games from 1980’s and 1990’s – the games that still today inspiring people’s passion and imagination.
Computer Space was developed in 1971, and generally accepted as one of the world’s first commercially sold video games. But the rule is considered quite complicated for general public at the time to understand: a player has to destroy the flying saucers while evading enemy fire. As a result, Computer Space is considered as commercial failure. But nevertheless, the game first demonstrated computer as a new form entertainment medium and impacted greatly on the beginning of the video game industry few years later.
Developed by Atari in 1972,PONG is known for its critical role on video game history as well as its influence on mainstream popular culture. PONG offer simple style of gameplay: a player controls the virtual paddle by moving it vertically to hit a tiny dot (ostensibly a tennis ball), competing against a second player who also controls a paddle. Also few small game design elements, in which dividing the paddle in segments to affect a dot’s angle of return and speed, made PONG distinctive from any other video games attempted at the time. Market success of PONG inspired the birth of the video game industry and its culture.
